Z is for ZOTZ! - 2013-120

Via Flickr:
This book from 1947 is a favorite.

In 1962 it was made into a movie which starred Tom Poston. If you are familiar with his work, you know it was a comedy. I was not alive in 1947, but was old enough in ’62 to see the movie – and remember loving it.

They gave us coins at the theater – see the film to understand why. I thought I still had my ZOTZ! coin, but alas it seems to have been lost along the way.

I found the book at a yard sale some years ago and read it. To sum up the book very briefly, it is a commentary on governmental bureaucracy – someone tries to help the government end the war and is sent from one department to another to another with his special skills.

I won’t give away any more than that, please read it for yourself if you are interested. (I don’t think that the movie completely followed the storyline of the book, but I could be mistaken – 1962 was a long time ago!)

Anyway, it just seemed the perfect end to this unofficial alphabet challenge – and you get 2 Zs for the price of one!

Peace to all, Judi

Such a Poser - 2013-118

Via Flickr:
Went on a photo shoot with camera club members this morning. One member invited us to her house and her neighbors invited us to their yards as well.

One had great gardens and pools and architecture, the other had several horses; this and a brown one were out when I visited.

Hopefully I'll have a lot to share as I process all the shots. Just had to share this one first!

Peace to all, Judi

X is for Xeriscaping - 2013-117

I just love this place. So much to see.

By the time I left it was 93F.

Went to lunch at local vegan restaurant to fill up and cool off!

M is for Mouse - 2013-105

Via Flickr:
Half of a salt and pepper set.

The other half of the set is a wedge of cheese, and there is a very cute story that goes with this.

Once my sister, brother, and I were gone from the family home, my parents would take very long driving vacations all around the USA. My Dad was retired, and my Mom had a seasonal job which gave her more than the summer off.

My mother loved the Corning Factory Outlet in Corning, NY, makers of Corningware and Pyrex; the catalog was delivered to my parents' house via mail. This was one of the stops they made each year.

One year, before they went, the issue that arrived had a large, glass mouse and cheese on the cover - it looked exquisite, and cost a fortune. In jest I asked my parents to buy that for me as the souvenir they would bring to me. Of course they couldn't do that even if they wanted to, but did find this salt and pepper set somewhere along the trip and brought that instead. Brings back all kinds of wonderful memories of the love they had for me.

Happy Monday and peace to all.

E is for Experiment-2013-095

E is for Experiment-2013-095, originally uploaded by Judi FitzPatrick Studio.

I recently bought a new camera. I'm not independently wealthy, so a full-frame DSLR was not in the budget. So I purchased the Canon EOS-60D (I've used a 40D for several years; it now needs repair.)

I enjoyed the outcome of the in-camera HDR done in my iPhone recently, so decided I needed to try out the DSLR version of this.

My editor of choice is GIMP and there is a plug-in(?) for it that performs the HDR image combining steps, much like the Photoshop process.

This image is the result of that experiment I did today. The above and below were +/-3 which I automated using the AEB function of the camera.

The results are OK to my way of thinking. Next experiment I want to try is the same image I did in the iPhone to see a side-by-side comparison - more on that another day.

Peace to all!
